5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid substance. It can be used as a precursor of serotonin (serotonin, 5-HT) in the human body (and as a precursor of melatonin). Some studies have shown that 5-HTP can increase the concentration of serotonin in the brain, improve depression and promote melatonin formation, improve sleep quality, and suppress appetite, but these studies still have problems. Therefore, more research is still needed to confirm whether 5-HTP has these physiological effects. Griffonia seeds are rich in 5-hydroxytryptophan and are the main natural source of 5-HTP.
How does it work?
Through increasing the production of the chemical, 5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system. Serotonin affects sleep, appetite, body temperature, sex and pain. Because serotonin increases serotonin production, it is also used in many diseases where serotonin plays an important role, including depression, insomnia, obesity and many others.
1. Improves depression
Some clinical research shows that taking 5-HTP by mouth can improve symptoms of depression.
2. Weight loss
5-HTP may increase feelings of fullness, causing you to eat less and lose weight.
3. Improves symptoms of fibromyalgia
5-HTP supplements can improve symptoms of fibromyalgia, a disease characterized by muscle and bone pain, as well as general weakness.
4. Helps reduce migraine frequency
5-HTP is said to help with migraines, which are throbbing headaches that are often accompanied by nausea or disturbed vision.
5. Promotes sleeping
5-HTP produces serotonin, which is converted to melatonin. melatonin plays an important role in regulating sleep. Its levels start to rise at night to boost sleep and drop in the morning to help wake you up. Therefore, 5-HTP supplementation may promote sleep by increasing melatonin secretion in the body.
